THE TURKISH MEMORIAL
AT PUKEAHU NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL PARK

The Turkish Embassy is delighted to announce that the Turkish Memorial at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington will be unveiled at a ceremony to be held on Monday 20 March 2017 at 4:30 p.m. The Honourable Maggie Barry, ONZM, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage of New Zealand, has graciously agreed to co-host the ceremony with Ambassador Ahmet Ergin of Turkey.

Turkey commemorates its fallen soldiers every year on 18 March in ceremonies in Gallipoli and around the country, much like Anzac Day dawn services in New Zealand and Australia. The unveiling ceremony coincides with the 102nd anniversary of the end of the Dardanelles Naval Campaign. The failure of this campaign prompted the British Empire to execute the then largest amphibious assault ever attempted, the Gallipoli Campaign, which saw acts of heroism and valor by both the attackers and the defenders.

Funded by the Turkish Prime Ministry’s Overseas Promotion Fund, the main component of the Turkish Memorial is a solid bronze plaque designed by the renowned New Zealand Defence Force artist, Matt Gauldie. The Turkish Memorial will be illuminated every night and accompanied by a Turkish red pine (pinus brutia) sourced from the Gallipoli Peninsula in Çanakkale, Turkey, and grown in a nursery in Wellington.

The Turkish Memorial at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park joins the Atatürk Memorial at Tarakena Bay as another permanent symbol of the friendship between Turks and New Zealanders forged after the First World War, and nurtured ever since.

The Embassy would be delighted to welcome members of the public at the unveiling ceremony on Monday, when further artistic details will be made available concerning the design of the Turkish Memorial at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park.
